Designing Investigations

Doing what scientists do

Children are born true scientists.
They spontaneously experiment and experience and re-experience again. They select, combine, and test, seeking to find order in their experiences - "which is the mostest? which is the leastest?" They smell, taste, bite, and touch-test for hardness, softness, springiness, roughness, smoothness, coldness, warmness: they heft, shake, punch, squeeze, push, crush, rub, and try to pull things apart.

Hands-on Lessons, Labs, & Activities
Gummy Bear Science - updated version of a previous lesson
Powerpoint for Gummy Bear Science Lesson
BunnyCopters - a fun, easy way to introduce or practice
    experimental design
Copter template - slightly larger than the one in the lesson
Helicopters - another version of the above lab
Scientific Cents - scaffolded lessons to introduce experimental
design - I explain how I use this lab and Bubble Tubes here.
Scientific Cents 2 - another version of the above lab
Scientific Cents version 1 - Older version of above lab
Bubbles Tubes; updated - series of labs designed to reinforce or
    assess experimental design
Bubble Tubes available from Educational Innovations
Bubble Tubes, version 1 - older version of the above lab
Bubble Tubes, version 2 - older version of the above lab
Cookie Caper - experimental design with chocolate chip cookies
Bridges - experimental design with bridges; good STEM or
    engineering integration
Drops on a Penny - classic lab to sow experimental design.Tthis
is a teacher-directed lab; good for an introduction
Paper Towel Testing - another classic lab
    Lesson PowerPoint
Towel Test version 1 - more scaffolding included
    Towel Test version 2
Paper Airplanes - good introduction to experimental design
    Instructions for making paper planes
Water Clocks - design an investigtion that can keep time -
    good STEM or engineering integration
Tootsie Pop Investigation - experimental design using the
    Tootsie Pop candy
Density Investigation - designed to introduce/reinforce
experimental design; it's also a good introduction to density
Grow Animals Investigation - experimental design using the
"grow" toys that come in capsules & expand in water
Independent Investigation - Good for Science Fair Projects
Independent Investigation 2 - another version
Does the temperature of the water affect how fast the
colored coating dissolves from an M&M? -
