Genetics & Heredity

Passing it on

Human beings are ultimately nothing but carriers-passageways- for genes.
They ride us into the ground like racehorses from generation to generation. Genes don't think about what constitutes good or evil. They don't care whether we are happy or unhappy. We're just means to an end for them. The only thing they think about is what is most efficient for them.

Hands-on lessons, Labs, & Activities
Edible DNA Model - make a model of DNA with candy
Other versions of the above lab
Have Your DNA and Eat it Too - from the Genetic Science
      Learning Center
    Edible DNA - from BrightHub
Easter Egg Genetics - there are several versions of this lesson
on the internet. The original is from Access Excellence, but a quick
search will bring up an assortment of choices, all with similar
instructions. This is my version of a student sheet for the activity.
Dragon Genetics - like Easter Egg Genetics, there are multiple
versions of this lesson easily available on the 'net. Some are a
little advanced for middle school (IMO). This is my take on it.
Baby Face Lab - classic lab where students flip a coin to
determine the traits of a baby
Bean Genes - practice making predictions from monohybrid crosses
Blending Butterflies - students explore adaptations by designing
    and camouflaging butterflies
    Butterfly pattern
Breeding Bunnies - investigate changes in gene frequency
Chromobugs - a series of activities to help students understand
the ideas of genetics and heredity
    Short version of the lesson
Full lesson - takes several days
Chromobug Chronicle - for use with the full lesson
    Chromobug chromosome template
DNA Extraction - using dried peas
    PowerPoint for above lesson
    Analysis sheet for above lesson
Genetics & Fingerprints - fun, easy lab
Fishsticks - students explore inherited and acquired traits
Fishsticks - advanced version of above
    PowerPoint for Fishsticks lessons
Toothpick Fish - slightly different version of above.
    Spreadsheet for Toothpick Fish
From One Generation to the Next - students simulate the to
transmission of genetic information of grandparents, to parents,
    children.
Genes in Motion: Mitosis - lesson from the National Human
    Genome Research Institute
Genetics Scavenger Hunt - quick, easy lesson to introduce
genes. Students observe the traits of classmates.
Genetic Variation - Lesson from National DNA Day, 2008
